How it all began!

Namgyal Hostel was established in 1981 by the council for Tibetan education in Dharamsala under the guidance of H.H. the Dalai Lama in response to the ever increasing need of better education and care of Tibetan children. The hostel started with 20 children from distant places like Mustang, Shabru, Solukhumbu, Dorpatan, Dolpo, Humla and Pokhara. The students were sent to a Nepali school known as Paropakar High School for their education. Tibetan language is taught in hostel. In 1983, it was named as Namgyal Primary Boarding School and was recognized by the ministry of education, His Majesty's Government of Nepal. The teachers were appointed by the Snow Lion foundation, which is under the Education Department CTA Dharamasala. Mr. Rinchen Dharlo officially inaugurated the Namgyal Primary boarding school, the then Representative of His. Holiness the Dalai Lama of Nepal on 23rd of February 1983.

In 1992, late Mr. C Baron, a native of Belgium, bought us a land to help accommodate and facilitate our children with better education and environment at Ichangu, Swoyambhu, behind the ring road. Later in 1996, the president of SOS Kinderdorf International Mr. Helmut Kutin accepted our proposal of constructing a new school complex on the land purchased to us by late Mr. C Baron. The construction work was commenced on ward 29th May 1996 and was finally completed on 24th of October 1998. The SOS Kinderdorf International also equipped us with all the necessary furnitures in the school. For your kind information, we have started to conduct our regular classes in the newly constructed school building with effect from 26th October 1998.

Although we possess quite big land, yet we lack sufficient ground for hosting major event of school activities such as Annual Inter house sports Meet, School Picnic and football Matches. With the help of Honarable sherig Kalon (Department of education) and our school had bought additional land for the school play ground. With the acquisition of additional piece of land, our children are gaining more strength and vigor both physically as well as mentally from the games and sports, act as reinforcement in their day-to-day activities.

Our school was first located ten minutes walk from the Swoyambhu monkey temple. The buildings are arranged around a two Level courtyard. Office and Dining hall were in one large building, Classrooms and Bathrooms encompass the lower court and two boarding houses complete the perimeter. A third dorm is down on the main road and the kindergarten is at the back along the path in a separate quiet area. It is unfortunate to see that there are not adequate resources to provide these children with a spacious, green field to play in.

Mr. Helmut Kutin approved the construction of a sport pavilion on the newly purchased playground. It is mainly for the spectators to have a good view of the activity that takes place in the main ground. The space beneath the pavilion is used for indoor games and storage area for sports equipment.

Previously we have our office section at top floor of classroom building. Our two-year observation in this school states that the parents/guardians and visitors who come to pay school fees of their wards disturbs our classes. We have also received comments from our teacher and senior students that office on the top floor is not on a suitable location. Hence with the help of SOS Kinderdorf International, now we have separate building for school office that is near our school main gate.
